4 Things to do to Prevent a Hangover

I used to suffer terribly from hangovers, I was the person that had to clear her calendar for the day after any big event, knowing I would be in bed for most of it. With Christmas days away, and New Years Eve fast approaching, there is going to be a lot of imbibing going on. Below is my method for hangover prevention, hopefully it will save you some morning after suffering.

I know how this sounds, you’re picturing me throwing back 10 tequila shots and paying for it the next morning. However, that isn’t the case. Sometimes, I would have a terrible hangover from three glasses of wine, ok maybe a bottle, but still. The fact is, it wasn’t excessive drinking that was causing the problem, it was the fact that I wasn’t practicing smart drinking.

The past few years I’ve been more mindful of when the possibility of a hangover looms, and I prepare myself for it. This has completely changed my day after misery, and it’s worth the hassle.

Make sure you do all four things, they work together as a synergistic hangover killing machine!

1. Stick with one kind of alcohol – this is easy for me,  basically I only drink wine. I realize some people like to mix it up a little and to that I say, beer before liquor never sicker, liquor before beer never fear. Not sure where wine fits into that,  I think it’s like Switzerland, neutral.

2. Drink lots of water – This is the most important one! When I say drink lots of water, I mean LOTS of water. Start in the morning and drink throughout the day. Yes you will have to pee A LOT. I use a 24 ounce water bottle, and try to drink 3-4 full bottles throughout the day. Then, when you’re out drinking all those fabulous Moscow Mules, have another glass of water at some point in the evening. If you haven’t drowned yourself by this time, before bed, have one more glass.

3. Carbo load – make sure and eat plenty of carbs to soak up the alcohol. Bread, pasta, crackers etc…also eat something before you start drinking. Drinking on an empty stomach is a recipe for disaster.

4. Lastly, Take 2 ibuprofen before going to bed.

This combination works wonders, I’m not saying you won’t feel bloated and icky the next day,  but at least you’ll be able to get out of bed, and possibly even have a semi productive day.

If all this fails, (then you must have drank a shit ton), revert back to the tried and true, hair of the dog. Have a Bloody Mary in the morning.

Cheers!

I can’t help but read this and think I am glad I do not drink anymore. but I think the water is a great tip. But from my girls that do drink, they swear by an essential oils blend that calms and soorhes the stomach. when you have over indulged in food and drink, Digestive Blend to the rescue. A drop in water before bed works wonders.
